UC Holds R.A.C.E. Against Suicide Seminar, Strengthening Mental Health Awareness

 To promote mental health awareness and suicide prevention, the University of the Cordilleras (UC) Guidance and Counseling Office (GCO) successfully conducted the “R.A.C.E. Against Suicide: A Gatekeepers’ Training Toolkit for Suicide Prevention in Schools” at the UC Theater on January 27 – 28, 2025. The two-day seminar gathered 103 students from the different colleges and 55 employees from various departments, reinforcing the importance of equipping both educators and students with the knowledge and skills necessary to support mental well-being. The seminar featured three distinguished speakers: Dr. Irene Alcantara, RGC, a Special Science Teacher II in Philippine Science High School, Ms. Leny Estacio, RGC, the Director of Center for Counseling & Structured Development in University of Baguio, and Ms. Raiza Basatan-Canillas, RGC, the Head of Wellness & Counseling Center in Kings College of the Philippines.

The discussions on the first day focused on Suicidology and the initial part of the How to R.A.C.E. Against Suicide framework, providing participants with crucial insights into the factors that contribute to suicide, early warning signs, and intervention techniques. On the second day, the speakers delved deeper into proactive prevention strategies and fostering a supportive school environment, emphasizing the role of the community in suicide prevention. To make the training more dynamic, the UC Peer Facilitators (UC PFs) led various interactive activities, including the “Double This, Double That” and “Eh Ikaw?” icebreakers. Case simulations also played a key role, allowing participants to apply their learning in real-life scenarios. A particularly impactful session was led by Ms. Basatan-Canillas, who discussed effective communication strategies when dealing with individuals experiencing suicidal ideation. Her talk highlighted the importance of compassionate listening and non-triggering language, equipping attendees with the tools to offer support while maintaining sensitivity.

The R.A.C.E. Against Suicide seminar received highly positive feedback, with an overall rating of 3.55 out of 4, signifying an “Excellent” evaluation from attendees. They expressed their gratitude for the insightful discussions and the opportunity to engage in conversations about mental health awareness and suicide prevention.

The event underscored the importance of community involvement in suicide prevention and the need for ongoing conversations about mental wellness. As the seminar concluded, one message stood out—suicide prevention is a collective responsibility, and by working together, we can create a more compassionate and supportive environment for all..
